Summer at Mount Hope

by Rosalie Ham

A black comedy about doing one’s best, Summer at Mount Hope was inspired by the letters from Rosalieʼs grandfather to her grandmother, a woman who eventually went mad and roamed the wheat fields in northern Victoria. It is at one level an unabashed romance set against a backdrop of grapes, dust and drought. But it is also the story of a spirited young woman, Phoeba Crupp, who in 1894 wishes for more than the times can offer her and whose passion finally gives way to practicalities.
